A Pumpkin Dream

I would suspect that when most pumpkins seeds are planted sometime in late spring, the dream is for them to grow big, round and orange. We've all seen those who've fallen short, the small, misshapen, or heaven forbid, still green pumpkins that just didn't make the cut. Equally horrifying are the MASSIVE, giants who lean to one side like a huge blob, who unless you're planning on entering a contest, are destined to remain right there in the garden where they grew, just too big to be useful to anyone other than the earthworms. I suppose those previously mentioned pumpkins would taste just as nice as the pretty ones in my pumpkin pie. However I believe most pumpkins have a bigger dream than to adorn Thanksgiving dinner. A dream to be plucked from obscurity, the lucky one to be picked among the thousands lying in the fields, to be brought home and proudly carved into whatever fabulous imagination beholds it.




Ours are pretty generic, the typical pumpkin faces, but sitting on my front steps, late at night, lit from within, they are amazing! These are my first jack-o-lanterns ever, and a first for my children as well. I think their pumpkin dreams are fulfilled.
